Tube Amp Warranty and Service: What to Look For

A tube amp warranty normally covers defects in materials and workmanship, not wear. Tubes are almost always excluded because they wear out with use. When you compare amps, look at how long the warranty runs, what exactly is covered, and who does the repairs. Kool Amplification amps and cabinets have a warranty with no time limit, with repairs by Kool's own team in the Netherlands.

What a tube amp warranty usually covers

Most amplifier warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. In plain terms: if a part fails because it was faulty, or because something was not built right, the maker repairs it. Think of a transformer that fails under normal use, a bad solder joint, a failing switch or a jack that comes loose.

What a warranty normally does not cover:

  • Wear parts, above all tubes.
  • Damage from use, such as a dropped amp, liquid spilled on it, or running it without a speaker load.
  • Modifications or repairs by someone else. Check the terms of your warranty before anyone opens the amp.
  • Cosmetic wear such as scuffed tolex from transport.

The length varies a lot between makers, and some warranties cover the amp and the speakers for different periods. Read the terms for each part of your rig separately.

Why tubes are not covered

Tubes are consumables, a bit like strings. Power tubes in particular slowly lose performance with every hour of playing, and how fast depends on how much and how loud you play. That is why nearly every tube amp warranty excludes them. It does not mean the maker expects them to fail early; it means a worn tube is not a defect. The signs of a tired tube are covered in when to replace amp tubes.

Kool Amplification's warranty

Here is how the warranty works for Kool products:

  • Amplifiers: warranty with no time limit, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Tubes are wear parts and are not covered.
  • Speaker cabinets: warranty with no time limit. The speakers in them have a 3-year warranty.
  • Speakers, pedals, covers, cables and footswitches: 3 years.
  • Repairs: done by Kool's own specialized team in the Netherlands, where every amp and cabinet is also handmade.
  • Returns: every amp, cabinet and accessory has a 14-day money-back guarantee. You can return an item within 14 days of delivery if it is unused, complete and in its original packaging; the buyer pays the return shipping.

So an Ace, 1984 or Marvell is covered for defects with no end date, and a cabinet such as the XOsn112 is too, with 3 years on the speaker.

Service: who repairs your amp?

A long warranty is only as good as the service behind it. Questions worth asking any maker:

  • Who does the repairs: the people who built the amp, or a third party?
  • Where is the service done, and how do you get the amp there?
  • Is there someone you can contact directly with a question?

With Kool, repairs and service are handled by its own people, who build the amps by hand in the Netherlands. You can reach Kool at sales@koolamplification.com or by phone on +31 (0)6 16425172. Kool also has dealers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Norway, and a representative in the UK. For tube replacements, there is a simple option: a matched spare set of power tubes, which you can swap yourself without rebiasing. You can add it to a new amp, or order it for an amp you already own by emailing the model or serial number.

What you can do to keep the warranty simple

  • Keep your proof of purchase and note your serial number.
  • Use the amp as the manual describes: speaker connected, correct impedance, room to breathe. The tube amp maintenance checklist lists the basics.
  • Protect it in transport with a padded cover or case, as explained in how to transport a tube amp.
  • Do not open the amp yourself. Apart from the warranty, there are high voltages inside, even when the amp is off and unplugged. If the amp needs work, contact the maker or a qualified technician.
  • Describe a fault as precisely as you can: what you hear, when it happens, and on which channel.
